In John 3:5, Jesus again speaks of the Holy Spirit’s involvement in the New Birth. He says, “unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” Just as there are two parents for there to be a physical birth, there are also two parents in order to experience spiritual birth. The two parents for spiritual birth are the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. The Spirit of God infuses the Word of God in the prospective convert, and when the sinner believes, the Spirit imparts the life of God. The word water in verse 5 is believed to represent the Word of God.
